About the Cover

Cover Figure

The cover image shows ANOVA gene tree. The 2055 genes identified as showing significant changes in expression between groups by ANOVA were used to construct a gene tree, shown on the left in green, where genes are grouped based on the similarities in their expression profiles. Genes that are located on adjacent branches have the most similar expression profiles, whereas genes located on distant branches have the most different expression profiles. Each colour bar represents a single gene. Colour coding shows expression levels for each gene compared with reference RNA. Yellow means a similar level of mRNA compared with the reference population, red means higher levels and blue lower levels. Each column represents one of six groups: Myometrial tissue (Myo), fibroid tissue (Fib), myometrial smooth muscle cells at passage 0 (MSMC P0), fibroid smooth muscle cells at passage 0 (FSMC P0), myometrial smooth muscle cells at passage 3 (MSMC P3) and fibroid smooth muscle cells at passage 3 (FSMC P3). This figure shows that the majority of the differentially expressed genes are either up-regulated (in red) or down-regulated (in blue) under in vitro conditions compared with whole tissue, regardless of whether they are of fibroid or myometrial origin (See Zaitseva et al., pp. 187–207).
